Samyang Experience with the AF 75mm F1.8 FE

Hi Mirco,
when did you start taking
pictures and when did you
realize that photography
was important to you?

"I started photography a few years ago, at the age of 19, when I was still in high school. I started it by chance when my grandfather was diagnosed with the first stage of Parkinson's. That year, on the occasion of my birthday, he gave me his analog camera kit: a slightly dated Nikon FM2 with the classic 50mm f/1.8 lens. Since then, I started having fun, taking pictures and developing them. Until a few years ago, the development of film was very expensive and I didn't always manage to develop all my photographs.

Logically, being a beginner, my shots weren't always perfect, indeed there were many more that I discarded. One day came a turning point: the cat decided to go up on the shelf where I kept my kit. Let's call it "coincidence" or "destiny", but it all fell to the ground. My first camera broke and I decided not to fix it, the cost being too high.

The next step was to buy a bridge camera, a mix between a compact and a reflex. This turned out to be a not very good choice for the type of photographs I was making at that time. So I decided to go back to reflex cameras, choosing a very practical and versatile entry level for those approaching this camera world. So it was that I entered the world of discos and events: during the evenings I took some photos, and then published them on websites or on Facebook.

Little by little, giving my contact around and meeting new people, I was asked to try taking portrait photos. So I started this new photographic style, realizing that my shots are much appreciated and also much more satisfying.

I continued like this for several years, carrying on this binomial, portrait photos and events photos, until the pre-covid period (January, 2020). In recent years I have also pursued other experiences in the wedding and commercial field. These then became my daily bread in the Covid period, alongside my classic portraits."

Ho iniziato a fotografare pochi anni fa, all’età di 19 anni, quando ancora andavo alle superiori. Ho iniziato per caso, quando a mio nonno è stato diagnosticato il primo stadio di Parkinson. Quell’anno, in occasione del mio compleanno, mi regalò il suo corredo analogico: una Nikon, un po’ datata ( Nikon FM2), con il classico obiettivo 50mm f/1.8. Da qual giorno ho iniziato a divertirmi, scattando foto e sviluppandole. Fino a qualche anno fa, lo sviluppo delle pellicole era molto costoso e non sempre riuscivo a sviluppare tutte le mie fotografie.

Logicamente, essendo alle prime armi, i mei scatti non erano sempre perfetti, anzi erano molti di più quelli che scartavo. Un giorno arrivò una svolta: il gatto decise di salire sulla mensola dove tenevo il mio corredo. Chiamiamola “coincidenza” o “destino”, ma cadde tutto a terra. La mia prima macchina fotografica si ruppe e valutai di non ripararla, essendo il costo troppo elevato.

Il passo successivo fu quello di comprare un bridge, un mix tra una compatta e una reflex. Questa si rivelò una scelta non molto corretta per la tipologia di fotografie che stavo realizzando in quel periodo. Decisi quindi di tornare alle reflex, scegliendo un’entry level molto pratica e versatile per chi si approccia a questo mondo. Fu così che entrai nel mondo delle discoteche e degli eventi: durante le serate facevo qualche foto, per poi pubblicarle su siti o su Facebook.

Poco per volta, dando il mio contatto in giro e conoscendo persone nuove, mi è stato chiesto di provare a fare foto di ritratti. Iniziai così questo nuovo stile fotografico, realizzando che i miei scatti sono molto apprezzati ed anche molto ben più appaganti.

Ho continuato così per diversi anni, portando avanti questo binomio, foto di ritratti ed eventi, fino al periodo pre-covid (Gennaio ’20). In questi anni ho portato avanti anche altre esperienze in ambito wedding e commerciale. Queste sono poi diventate il mio pane quotidiano nel periodo covid, affiancandole ai miei classici ritratti.

Have you tested the
Samyang AF 75mm F1.8 FE?
How was it?

I tried it immediately as soon as it arrived, because I was super excited. I have used Samyang AF 85mm F1.4 FE for a long time, so I would like to compare Samyang AF 75mm F1.8 FE lens with the AF 85mm F1.4 FE. Samyang AF 75mm F1.8 FE is super good! The quality of both lenses is really great. Both lenses are very light and have excellent design including the decent finishing and the red ring which represents Samyang's signature color.

L’ho provato subito appena mi è arrivato, perché ero super emozionato. Il mio termine di paragone era l’85mm f1.4, sempre del brand Samyang. Devo dire che mi sono trovato subito bene. Sempre la stessa qualità che contraddistingue la casa Koreana. Obiettivi molto leggeri e con finiture molto curate. Ottimo il design e l’anello rosso gli dona un tocco di stile che contraddistinguono il colore di Samyang.

How is the blurred
background or bokeh for
your photography?

Which lighting do you prefer
for your photography?

Normally I always shoot outdoors with variable environmental situations and without the use of flash or reflective panels. I always prefer to take pictures with the natural light. In the place where I live, in Trentino, I try to avoid the midday hours, so there is no annoying or direct light: thanks to the presence of the mountains and the trees, it is possible to obtain very interesting light / shadow contrasts.

Normalmente scatto sempre all’esterno, quindi con situazioni ambientali variabili e senza l’utilizzo di flash o pannelli riflettenti. Prediligo sempre la luce naturale. Nel luogo dove abito, in Trentino, evitando le ore del mezzogiorno, non si ha mai una luce fastidiosa o diretta: grazie alla presenza delle montagne e degli alberi si riesce ad ottenere contrasti luce/ombre molto interessanti.

How is the sharpness and the image quality of the AF 75mm?

Let me tell you, it is noteworthy. The image quality is very nice. The optical design makes it possible to achieve both compactness and image quality. It has very few aberrations and always has excellent resolution from corner to corner. The depth of field is very interesting as well, and it has very short minimum focusing distance - only 70cm.

Lasciatemi dire, è degno di nota. Con questo obiettivo, Samyang ha fatto centro. Molto bella la qualità dell’immagine che restituisce. Lo schema ottico che hanno utilizzato per progettare l’obiettivo ha permesso di ottenere sia compattezza sia qualità nell’immagine. Pochissime aberrazioni e da angolo ad angolo sempre un’ottima risoluzione. Molto interessante è la profondità di campo ottenuta, questa sicuramente dovuta anche dalla ridotta distanza di messa a fuoco minima (70 cm ndr.)

How is the autofocus performance?

I have tested the AF 75mm on the Sony a7III and a7rIII body: shooting differences, setting the same parameters, I didn't notice. Compatibility with the camera body is the same as if you were mounting proprietary brand lenses. This was an advantage for me, as I can take advantage of all the potential that the lens offers me.

Trying the "Burst" mode and testing it on a fairly close and moving female subject, it performed very well. The metering was set to “Spot” and medium speed burst.

The autofocus has always locked the subject on all 20 photos I took, it should be noted that on 8 frames, however, it was unable to take eye tracking.
However, I admit that the situation was very extreme: the girl often moved her hair and it fell promptly in front of her face. Overall I was very happy with the autofocus of Samyang AF 75mm F1.8 FE.

Io ho provato il 75mm su un corpo Sony a7III e a7rIII: differenze di scatto, impostando gli stessi parametri, non ne ho notate. La compatibilità con il corpo macchina è la stessa come se se si montassero obiettivi del marchio proprietario. Questo è stato un vantaggio per me, in quanto riesco a usufruire di tutte le potenzialità che mi offre l’obiettivo.

Provando la modalità “Raffica” e testandolo su un soggetto femminile abbastanza ravvicinato e in movimento, si è comportato molto bene. La misurazione esposimetrica era impostata su “Spot” e raffica velocità media.

L’ autofocus ha sempre agganciato il soggetto su tutte e 20 le foto che ho scattato, da segnalare che su 8 frame però non è riuscito a prendere il tracking dell’occhio. Ammetto però che la situazione fosse molto al limite: la ragazza spostava spesso i capelli e cadevano puntualmente davanti al viso. In generale sono rimasto molto contento.

How is the portability of the
AF 75mm lens?

Super! It's really super compact and very light. You might forget to have it in your bag! It takes very little space in the camera bag. Compared to the 85mm lens I own, it weighs exactly half - only 230 grams. I always bring this lens in my bag wherever I go! It is really an extra weapon in my kit.

Super! Davvero super compatto e leggerissimo. Ti dimentichi di averlo in borsa e occupa pochissimo spazio. Rispetto al 85mm che possiedo, pesa esattamente la metà. (230grammi peso ufficiale Samyang) È un’ottica da avere sempre in borsa quando si va sul set. È davvero un’arma in più nel mio corredo.

lens as the first lens for the
beginners or hobbyists?

Absolutely YES! I would definitely pair the Samyang AF 75mm with the AF 35mm. The value for money of the AF 75mm F1.8 FE lens is fantastic, compared to the same focal lengths of other brands.

Assolutamente sì, il Samyang 75mm lo accoppierei sicuramente ad un 35mm. Anche come prezzo di acquisto è molto interessante, paragonato alle stesse lunghezze focali di altri brand, dove non hai lo stesso rapporto qualità-prezzo.

Samyang’s Guide to Achieving the Optimal Angle of View

The perfect spacing and distance are always necessary when shooting all kinds of subjects, including people, to give them a proper relationship with the beautiful space around them. So, what’s the exact distance that helps you best appreciate a work of art, or a photo?

The correct answer is the diagonal length of the full frame of a subject.

The best standpoint from which to appreciate the full view of a subject is the distance of the diagonal length of the subject frame. This wider angle is superior to standing closer at a 50 degree angle to get a more detailed view. This notion of an ideal distance or view point is also applicable in the world of photography.

For still images, keeping a distance equal to the diagonal length of the full image surface is recommended. The full frame sensor of a digital camera is 36 x 24mm and the diagonal length is 43.26mm so any distance close to this number is nearer to the ideal than the currently accepted industry standard of 50mm.

Back when film cameras were common, 45mm was the industry standard and this continued as reflex cameras needed extra space to fit a mirror. However, as mirrorless cameras become more popular again, there has been a need to return to this industry standard…which is the impetus for the Samyang AF 45mm F1.8 FE. With less distortion than a 35mm lens and wider angles than a 55mm lens, the Samyang AF 45mm F1.8 FE is a perfect lens for portraits, landscapes, architecture photography, and pictures of pets.

What is Preset Aperture Control Function?

On the Preset Aperture Control function, the aperture blade operates smoothly like a "De-clicked lens", which is advantageous for video recording.
Fujifilm cameras are engineered to control the aperture according to the minimum exposure value(F-stop), so when the camera controls the aperture, it blinks momentarily to set the proper exposure.

AF 75mm F1.8 X intentionally disconnects the communication with the camera body and the lens itself on the Preset Aperture Control function, so it is possible to smoothly adjust the exposure without flickering. ISO and shutter speed are adjusted according to the changed exposure by controlling the aperture, so the exposure value can be changed even with the 1/2 F-stop.

A dolly shot, also referred to as a tracking shot or trucking shot, is a camera movement technique used by cinematographers to track and follow a subject in motion. To achieve this, the camera is mounted on a device called a "dolly," which facilitates smooth tracking movement. The dolly can move in front of, behind, or alongside the subject, which can be a person, a location, a product, or any other object of focus in the frame. Through this, you can control the emotional distance between the subject and the viewer by highlighting the audiovisual and dramatic effects.

[How to take a Dolly Shot simply by handheld]

Tip. If the moving distance is long, the camera may shake, so please shoot at a focal length between 35 and 100mm.
1. Stand at a distance of about 1.5 to 2 meters away from the subject.
2. Set the custom switch to MF and Mode 3 and adjust the focal length to about 100mm.
3. After focusing on the subject, set the aperture to F8~16.
4. Slowly turn the zoom ring to the left (towards the wide-angle end) while using your upper body and arms to move the camera toward your subject.
5. Dolly Shot complete!
※ When shooting from a farther distance from the subject, use a cart or gimbal for more stable shooting.
